In just two years, Earth Rated Poop Bags, a Canadian company, has gone from selling their biodegradable and compostable bags online to being carried in more than 1,500 stores across North America — with no advertising or sales team. The business was founded with $50,000 in combined personal savings by cousins Abby Gnanendran and Divyan Selvadurai and friends David Couillard, David Ngo and Monica Sposato. By simply sending free samples to pet stores, along with an order form, the firm is on track to realize $2 million in revenue this year (2012). Initially, they sold directly to consumers on the website, using feedback to tweak the product. Within six months, thanks to an old fashioned marketing strategy, retailers were reaching out.
